Ten years ago, gender parity in the workplace was not exactly a hot topic. Business leaders either did not think there was an issue and some even thought that they had already solved it.
In 2007, it was estimated that around one in twenty international assignments were held by women. Thankfully in the last decade that number has increased to around one in four but it’s still not enough. Overlooking women for international assignments occurs for many reasons. The primary explanation is that many companies believe they’ll say “no.” In my view, this suggests that the core leadership of companies must elevate women to senior roles.
